Hello to Peter Capaldi, the official twelfth Doctor!

David Tennant was the Doctor when I first started watching Doctor Who. He was my Doctor. When Matt Smith was first announced as his predecessor, I acted like a disgruntled child, complained that he was too young, and refused to open my heart to a new Doctor, because I adored David Tennant so much. What I didn’t know was that as soon as Matt Smith was shown scurrying around and being the Doctor in his first episode, I would adore him just as much, and he would be my Doctor, too.

One of the great things about the Doctor is that he is absolutely not bound by appearance or age. If you want to be the Doctor, all you need is to do is play the 900+ year old Timelord from Gallifrey, who’s lost much, seen much, and never stops running, and do it with excellence.

I fully trust Peter Capaldi to do just that. The more I look at him, the more I see the Doctor in him. I can’t fully see him as the Doctor until I actually see him being the Doctor, but just as I gave Matt Smith a chance and was so happily surprised by him, I will happily wait for Peter Capaldi’s first episode and let him surprise me with whatever way he becomes the Doctor. So, welcome, Peter Capaldi. Welcome to the best role any actor could ever have the privilege of bringing to life: the Doctor.

  1. Dang, I just started getting into Dr. Who this summer, and I’m only on series 2. I have quite a bit of catching up to do! 😉
